NATOVI (FIJI)
HOSTEL PROJECT
THE PROJECT
In the June 2006 Bulletin
of the Vincentian Solidarity Office (VSO), Br Peter Campbell
CM announced the awarding of a number of grants in response to
Micro-Project Grant Applications for assistance with different
Vincentian Missionary Projects around the world. Among these
grants was one for Natovi, Fiji, a region of the Australian Province of
the Congregation of the Mission.
Fr Filimoni Vosabalavu CM
and Fr Alan Gibson CM applied last year for the grant through the VSO,
and the Vincentian Mission in Natovi received FJ$8600. for a local
project. The aim of the project is to set up a farm to assist in
the operations of St Vincent's College Hostel at Natovi
which houses some 250 young people aged between 6 and 18 who board in
the hostel so they can attend school, as well as provide the children living there
with a balanced diet. With the finance made available by the VSO,
and under the direction of Fr Filimoni Vosabalavu CM, the land that used
to be farmed by Br Brendan Tanner CM many years ago was cleared,
fenced and ploughed.. The cleared land is
now being used for growing pawpaws, capsicums, cucumbers, tomatoes,
watermelons and eggplants.
Some of this produce will be used for food in the Hostel.
The rest will be sold to help in managing the Hostel and upgrading facilities
there.
The parents of the young people are subsistence farmers who can only
afford to pay nominal fees for their children to live at the hostel.
