Vincent de Paul was born at Ranquine, a hamlet near the village of  Pouy  (now known as St Vincent de Paul), a few kilometres from Dax in the south west of France (Gascony), in 1581.  This region of France was known as The Landes (Marshlands), and there Vincent spent his youth, helping with the farm work. The building which was the family home had completely collapsed by 1700, and a replacement was constructed in the nineteenth century, within a few metres of  where the original house had stood.
