While not
exactly classed as a work of art, this plaster ceiling has many memories
for the confreres in the Australian Province of the Congregation of the
Mission. In the days when Curzon Hall at Marsfield, Sydney, was the
house of formation for Vincentians in Australia (with some confreres from
Fiji, the Philippines, Spain and Indonesia also spending part of their
formation time there), the building and property were known as St
Joseph's Seminary, Eastwood. The ceiling of the Seminary Chapel was
decorated with plaster Miraculous Medals, as well as Crosses with
entwined passion flowers.
When the
Seminary closed, the property was leased, and later sold, to a firm of caterers.
The
building has reverted to its original name of Curzon Hall.
Though the old Chapel is now a Conference/Dining Room, the ceiling
retains its decorative features, and is a talking point for all who visit Curzon Hall.
The 2002
Provincial Assembly of the CMs of the Australian Province was held at Curzon
Hall.
