St Vincent de
Paul Church, Port Wakefield SA, opened on May 29, 1870, is the
oldest building in the town. Rev. Julian Tenison Woods,
Director of Catholic Education in South Australia and co-founder
with Mother Mary McKillopof
the Sisters of St. Joseph, preached the sermon on the evening of its
opening. Mother Mary McKillop (now Blessed) also set up
a school in the town.
The
stained glass windows above the altar in the Church (photos not
available) are the work of Mr E. F. Troy, the founder of
the Vincent de Paul Society in South Australia. His work can
be seen in a number of buildings in Adelaide.
